SecondLife...give me a break

| | Comments (0)

Not wanting to fall behind on the latest online trends I decided to give SecondLife a whirl. I don't get it. Of course I never played or got The Sims either. The graphics are so-so, a huge amount of SecondLife resources seem to be adult/vulgar in nature, and chatting is just random shorthand (which I can't stand).

The site is most pathetic if you don't surrender any cash so you can buy virtual crap. I understand needing $$$ to make the site work, but do you have to endow newbies with $0? Whats a one time $50 when you dole out something like $2500 a week to subscribers.

I think I'm gonna pass.

Laptops

I am configuring a couple of brand new laptops. The units are really nice, but I can't stand the sheer amount of trialware, crippleware and corporate spyware. Why can't anybody ship a laptop with the operating system and hardware drivers and a CD to install all the other Crap if you want to?

Broken

Computers Die. Computers die a lot. Bad motherboards in laptops, screwed up device drivers, melted power supplies. It is a wonder that companies keep their computers running that are vital to their business.

For this very reason I keep spares around, and make lots of back-ups.

I also find it valuable for a company of most any size to have a guru on staff or have a good relationship with a reputable computer consultant (not a one-man operation with too many clients).

Companies with their own in house guru's should show the proper care and feeding of their guru by letting them buy cool toys, have the best computer in the office and let them go to nice out of town geeky events. (hint, hint)
